In an era marked by a significant shift in cyber threats, a new and alarming trend is on the rise: Cybercrime-as-a-Service. This paradigm allows individuals without deep technical know-how to partake in cybercrimes through user-friendly service platforms. This evolution in the cyber threat landscape was highlighted by top cybersecurity experts who observe an increasing simplification of hacking techniques.

Cybercrime-as-a-Service: The New Norm

Historically, cyber threats like ransomware and phishing have plagued the digital world. However, today marks the dawn of a new chapter with the advent of Cybercrime-as-a-Service. This includes subsets such as Phishing-as-a-Service and Scam-as-a-Service, which have democratized the means to commit cyber offenses. This model crucially lowers the barrier for entry, allowing virtually anyone to engage in cyber activities by purchasing pre-made hacking tools and services from dark web marketplaces.

Hieu PC, a former hacker turned security expert, highlighted this in a recent episode of the podcast “Into The Cyberverse.” Now working with the National Cyber Security Center of Vietnam and collaborating with tech giants like Apple and Google, Hieu PC founded the non-profit initiative ChongLuaDao (Scam Fighters). He explained, “Now, everyone, even those without technical backgrounds, can access tools on platforms like GitHub to start hacking.”

The Growing Menace of Non-Tech Hackers

During the podcast, Hieu PC discussed how non-technical individuals could easily procure fake bank accounts or stolen personal data from black markets to commit identity theft. “For as little as $2 a day, or even free, anyone can become a hacker,” Hieu PC asserted. These new avenues not only precipitate financial damage but also inflict psychological distress, as seen in various case studies involving romance scams and fraudulent job offers.

The Looming Threat of Deepfakes

Experts warn that deepfake technology represents one of the most sinister cyber threats. Its ability to create convincingly realistic fake videos and audios poses a severe challenge in distinguishing authenticity. The Onfido report revealed 31-fold increase in deepfake-related crimes in 2023 alone. Despite its dangers, deepfake technology remains surprisingly affordable, available for as little as $20 to $50 a month.

The Way Forward

As cybercriminals grow more adept, it is crucial for internet users to enhance their online security measures. The podcast series “Into The Cyberverse” serves as a vanguard in this domain, offering in-depth discussions and expert advice on cybersecurity. Hieu PC emphasized the importance of cybersecurity awareness, especially given our extensive activity on social platforms where personal information is often exposed.

In upcoming episodes, Hieu PC will share insights on safeguarding against the evolving threats of cyber attacks and scams, providing listeners with practical advice on information verification and implementing robust authentication practices to protect their accounts.

Tune into ‘Into The Cyberverse’ for more expert insights on protecting yourself in the digital age!
